Reinventing a Library Environment

The Mount Laurel (NJ) Trading Spaces Project: Reinventing the Library Environment is a project designed to address the simple idea that space matters. Here's a blurb..
"Space matters. Environment matters. Service matters. Collection matters.... think about the importance of environment and customer experience and take the necessary steps to ensure that we (libraries) are destinations of choice and centers of our communities."

One Bank of America branch in New Jersey addressed the problem of fewer people visiting their branch by ultimately redefining what customer service is. "They designed an open floor space with no back offices so that all employees provide customer service on the floor. There is a children's reading area, a large screen TV, and coffee and snacks for customers." Despite the fact that many people conduct their banking online, people still visit their branch because, I suspect, it's relevant to them. One comment, " 'It's nice, it's open. You feel welcome when you come in here, people are greeting you.' Customers choose to spend time at the branch, because when they do, they are assured a pleasant experience."

Continuing to think in and outside of the box while processing ideas....

Pageflakes

Just back from NELA with recommendations from presenters regarding technologies to explore... one 'must see' is www.pageflakes.com which organizes your RSS feeds, favorite flickr photos, YouTube videos, your to do list and more all from one page. It's a good way to organize my information. If you create a page, let me know what you think. More next time...

Marketing Libraries

I just happened upon a blog that discusses how to market libraries in new ways including strategies to integrate technology into marketing plans. When I owned my own business I learned how to market my products (and ultimately the business) effectively with a goal of better promoting the shop's offerings. If this isn't done, a business can have the best product or service around but no one knows about it because it hasn't been marketed effectively. It's exciting to think about libraries partnering up with new technologies for marketing purposes.....

My technological explorations continue...

A couple of photos courtesy of Flickr (and me) can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/57525030@N00/

For an exercise in subscribing to pics at Flickr, look for the feed button below the photos.

My next self-imposed task will be to subscribe to colleagues' photos and blogs so I'll receive all updates as feeds.

But tomorrow's another day....
