Sally's World

A place for me to explore blogging with posts about library technologies and other library related interests (with some "Mustang talk" every now and again...)

Oh, the places we'd go....

Taking a break from "technology talk" for at least this one post....

I've been inspired by a column I read yesterday in the curent issue of American Libraries (December 2006). Through her column, Mary Pergander implores each of us to take the initiative in connecting our special skills and interests to our libraries. She suggests that employees may think they're serving their employers best by just being there to do whatever management asks of us. However, this "noble and helpful" mentality denies the library "the possibilities inherent in letting employers know what we can offer and how we can help."

Points to consider:
*People are not psychic and, unless we've stated it, they will not know we have a particular interest.
*Subscribe to the philosophy of "I will let them know what I can offer and how I might be of help."
*"Don't wait for an invitation to use your talents, to do work that appeals to you, or to develop new skills."
*Sharing our career desires, plans and talents...may fill a library need, too.

My interest: Library Marketing. Let's see what need that could fill.....

Now, imagine if every employee embraced the philosophy of incorporating their special interests into serving their library. Oh, the places we'd go...
